The #PopeFranciseffect in the Philippines: My Thoughts

Over the weekend, millions of Filipinos (mostly Christian Catholics) gathered in the much anticipated 5-day visit of Pope Francis in the Philippines. As early as last year, Filipinos are eagerly awaiting and preparing for his arrival. Not everyone is privileged enough to visit the Vatican City as it cost thousands of bucks to get there or to have a (if you're lucky enough) glimpse of him in the city. But with the news of the coming of the Pope, everyone was given high hopes and spirits to see him in person as a once in a lifetime experience one could get including myself. I may have a big chance to visit Rome but for the majority which is the poor, it is quite impossible. So on January 15, 2015 at around past 5 in the afternoon, everyone is in festive mood (as it is also the celebration of the feast of Sto. Niño) to welcome him. It marked the most awaited day for all Roman Catholics in the Philippines after the last time Pope John Paul II visited the country in almost a decade. Good thing that the Philippine Government declared it a long-holiday (only at the National Capital Region) for our countrymen to be able to witness and be with the Pope in this memorable event in Catholic church. I believe that it is a timely event as it is the start of the new year, to bring hope and reflection for each and everyone of us. As new year's resolutions brings guide for a better life ahead each year, Pope Francis' message at the start of the year is truly moving, inspiring, a blessing, enlightening and leave each and everyone of us feeling recharged and immensely cleansed with God's divine intervention and immeasurable love for us overflowing through Pope's presence and through each Filipino's story as told. 


A lot of opinions though came to life because of differences in religion and belief. One thing is very important over all ideals and beliefs is towards our faith. Where are we being God's shepherd here on Earth? We should be deliverers of God's Word to see, to feel and to do good for our brothers and sisters who are the less fortunate in life. We are so quick to judge, to conclude and righteous in our own beliefs, in the religion we belong and yet we are showing ungodly practices. We pray, hear mass, involved in our church's activities and yet we are the opposite of what our Lord wants us to be. The Word of God that Pope Francis shared to us is clear that we need mercy, compassion, love to be good stewards of God's heaven on Earth. Whatever religious congregation we belong, as long as we are delivering what is expected of us, then we are making our God happy. It is not about the physical statues nor the presence of human persons like Pope Francis that we worship per se, but how these saints and people that God send as medium or instruments to make us realize that God is in us, with us every step of our way. Their ways are truly inspiring and worth following. Sure, they have there own mistakes and sins, but more so they have made a big difference in serving the Lord our God in their own little ways. That we should not forget God as our Savior, our Redeemer, our Salvation in the hope when everything is faltering. The unwavering love, hope, compassion and mercy is what Pope Frances emphasizes God wants us to remember and put to heart. It is not God equals Pope Francis but like God, Pope Francis wants us to be aware that we should not lose hope, lose faith and lose ourselves for God is right there. 


I believe that one must also respect one's religious belief. If you are serving the Lord in ways that He wants you to see, feel and do, then you are in the right path. No need to argue about who's better. It is just sad that people are so into religion where in fact religion does not save you. It's your faith and your character will define how you are to our Creator, our Redeemer and Savior. In parting words, I hope that with the visit of Pope Francis we are touched with the message it delivered. It's some sort of a retreat that we have reflected upon, come to terms with ourselves to our Lord and how God has touched our soul, our heart and mind silently. #popefrancisPH

Owning a #CathKidston: The loooong wait is over!

Bringing London's Cath Kidston here in the Philippines is one brilliant idea. I couldn't contain my giddy and excitement when I first saw and read it at Ms. Daphne and then at Ms. Leah's blog when its first store in the Philippines opened to the public on December 6 in Manila at Bonifacio Global area in Taguig.


About 3 to 4 years ago, my SIL brought me my first Cath Kidston bag. That time, I never had any idea of the brand name when in fact it's been in the business since 1993 but only in London. Since then, I've been hearing and reading articles from lifestyle and mommy bloggers and later on became one of my favorite items too. Funny thing is one time, when I happen to visit a Divisoria-like store here in Davao City, I saw Cath Kidston-inspired merchandise (of course not the authentic ones)! So it really is popular already here.


Our recent trip to London a month ago (see link here), gave me an idea of how popular and a staple to every Londoner Cath Kidston bags are in particular. Visiting their shops there makes me feel like a child, drooling and envying every item they have in store. Not only I am wishing to get myself to have one but also for my little girls. But it all fade away after the generous SIL I have gave me this as the latest design Cath Kidston has released in the market.

What I love about Cath Kidston bag in particular aside from the design and style, durability and versatility, is its texture. The bags that I own are made of water-proof materials that when it rains or accidentally something spills on it, I can just easily wipe it and not afraid of getting it stained or ruined. 

So to all Cath Kidston fanatics out there, I feel for you. A look of their trademark design alone can give thrill and chills to ones spine. It's something only a girl can understand. Looking forward to my next Cath Kidston possession. Anyway, it's Christmas!

Smart Gilas Pilipinas #BasketballWorldCup2014

All eyes now are glued in the Basketball World Cup which is being held in Spain as our Team #GilasPilipinas is playing. Showing notable, unforgettable and almost-winning 3 straight games against the top 5 leading basketball teams in the whole world, namely: Croatia, Greece and Argentina, it marked tremendously in the history of Philippine basketball and that of the whole basketball world that the current 34th in rank will be making headlines even if they didn't end up victorious. What makes #Gilas stand out from the rest of the team is the spirit, dedication and heart #Puso they have put in the game. Watching those games again and again, I felt goosebumps and can't help but be proud of and with them. Being a non-sport fanatic, victory of this sort is not appealing to me. The rush and intensity that comes with it is too manly for me. But the moment I joined my husband to his delight and interest watching and staying in tune of the games, I felt a sense of pride and honor to my fellow Filipinos. Bringing back the bacon is another thing but being able to represent the country, making a remarkable place in each and everyone's heart and mind is more than anyone could wish for.

Last night, our Team, #Gilas played against the Argentina was a never-say-die game. The score 85-81 is a no nonsense game. My hubby was extremely 'into' the game at early morning around 12:30. At first quarter, it's already intense leading the #Gilas by 7 points and no score for the Argentines yet. What made it even more thrilling and jaw-dropping is the moves of Norwood over Scola. Judging by the voice-over of Philippine commentators, it's such a remarkable move that even International sports journalists and enthusiasts made social media in raving party. See more of here. Reading on to these very positive and encouraging words from foreign bodies, it makes me twice to thrice proud of being a Filipino that a lot have looked down upon. So what makes us stand out from the rest of the world? Filipinos do things from the heart #Puso. Being passionate in everything we do and never gives up easily especially if it is for the country and family. Long live, Philippines! #pusongpinoy

Philippines' E-Jeepney

It's more fun in the Philippines. I really love the slogan our Philippine government had made to capture tourists to come visit our country. It doesn't only entice foreign visitors but also the locals to explore more of our country's natural resources and Mother nature has gifted us. Though I haven't been to all the places in the country, but I am very sure that Philippines is blessed with so much not other country has.

One of our country's trademark is the jeepney which Filipinos are known for with it's quirkiness and vibrancy as to its facade. It is a ride that transports people to and fro its destination within the streets aside from the car and bus.

However, along the way, Filipino inventors never stop discovering things that will benefit its people and the whole world in the long run. We all know that this kind of motor vehicle is contributing to the noise and air pollution around. The jeepney itself is not actually the problem but of how owners doesn't give regular maintenance to its units thus having smoke belchers everywhere and honking too aggressively without being sensitive. Glad that I was able to read in my FB newsfeed about this E-jeepney that will replace our traditional jeepney. Here's the link. 

Similarly, I was able to ride a jeepney of that kind yesterday.

At first, I was quite hesitant on riding that jeepney because it has no signage of its route. There were passengers already inside. The driver asked me if I was going to SM City Davao and I said yes.

When comfortably seated inside, I noticed that there's no much noise with regards to its engine. Normally, when you're inside you can hear the engine's noise and its muffler. But amazingly, it's such a smooth ride and it's noise free. Since I sat near the driver, I was looking on the driver's dashboard and the feet pads below where the clutch, brake and accelerator are located. I noticed that there is no gear. I have no idea as to when to use the gear but every time I think it's to be geared, he steps on to another feet pad which I think is the gear. 

I regret not taking the picture of it. But when somebody in front seated causing my view to be blocked, I wasn't able to take a photo na. The passenger asked if the jeepney is solar powered and the driver said yes. If I heard it right, the driver said around 8 to 10 e-jeepneys are being tested here in Davao City. And I think it's for free. But I already paid my fare. I only realize its for free because one of the passenger said thank you upon disembarking the jeep. Oh well, it's still worth it. I just put in mind it's a donation to this kind of project.

On Yolanda's Aftermath

It's almost a week after the raging super typhoon hit Central Philippines that left thousands in doom. Our country has been the headlines on television, radio, print ads and the social media locally and even internationally. It breaks my heart seeing and hearing the plight of these people because of misery and that are in dire help. Everything is like a nightmare and unimaginable to happen. What we see in movies came as a reality for us. HELP is the immediate need we can extend for the victims of this catastrophe.

I thought we are already prepared enough on this predicted super typhoon as it has been reported all around the news days before its coming. I thought that the casualties are manageable and minimal. But I realized you can never be totally prepared for anything. There would always be some lapses but at least we can have it prevented. Being complacent was what happened for some because it was just a "storm" and that we were used to having it, some would just say "we can manage it." There is also insufficiency to information, I personally think, to the people as to how this super typhoon would impact. Stating in figures as to how strong "Yolanda" is, I will never understand. Yes, they said it's the strongest to be ever recorded in history but it was not mentally pictured out. However, if it was explained in layman's term, I would think people will fear and will flock on higher grounds. Storm surge literally could be understood. But its effect, I wouldn't know. Natural phenomena is something we should not be taking for granted and consider seriously especially now that the environmental condition is unstable and unpredictable unlike before. The issue on climate change is not a joke and now we are getting its effects. Recycling is a simple and humble step to care for our world. In the long run, it has great positive impact on humanity.

I was kind of disgusted, frustrated, dismayed, disheartened, in disbelief on how the government took the initial steps to make immediate relief to those affected. A lot already questioned the leadership of our President and how slow things are being remedied. I understand very well this is a major challenge for our President and our countrymen as a whole and it's a serious matter. With this scenario, I think, as the leader of this country, he has the authority, the power and the command responsibility to impose certain steps to address the immediate needs of the survivors. Delegate, delegate and delegate to speed up process, Mr. President. I know people will raise eyebrows on me saying this. Because as the leader of this country, I believe you have every means (if not all) to do what is right that's why people are pushing you to do something. How could one still follow protocols, SOP's in the midst of everybody hungry, homeless, orphaned, sick, mournful, hopeless and worst anger. We don't have time to just sit back and relax because it's a life that is at stake now. Every second counts. Big amount of donations are pouring in from all parts of the globe since day 1 of the relief operations. It is overwhelming. But where is it now? People only want for that moment food to eat, water to drink, temporary shelter and a concerning leader for his people. If there's a will, there's a way as the saying goes. A lot of reasons and explanations are being said on why it took longer to deliver these goods to the concerned people but I find it very shallow. Good thing that there are concerned civic organizations or private individuals who go there own way to help. If not, these people would have been dead by now not because of the typhoon but because of hunger and sickness. The relief goods are useless if it is not distributed to the afflicted community right away and it defeats the purpose of these donations.

I hope that God will shower each and everyone of us wisdom, strength, generosity, hope and a humble heart to extend in any help we can give to those affected by the calamity. May our Almighty Father embrace our heavy hearts with love and assurance for a brighter days to come in time for Christmas and in all the days of our lives. Let us be one in this trials and we can rise above it all. To God be the glory!

Typhoon Storm "Yolanda" hits Philippines

We are braving the strongest typhoon/hurricane/storm "Yolanda" (International name "Haiyan") that is ever recorded in the world/history and the strongest for 2013. Even international news coverage has been monitoring this event since yesterday. Hearing this news alone makes me weaken and anxious even if here in the area where I am staying, we are not very much affected. As of this writing, the skies is bright though no trace of Mr. Sunshine and not even a drop of water from above.

I really pray and we should all pray that even it passes our territory, I hope that it will just pass by swiftly and not prolong in the place for too long. I pray also that my fellow Filipinos be more than ready for this another tragedy we are facing again. And I can see that the unity, generosity and the spirit of camaraderie of everyone is present despite calamity-after-calamity we are experiencing. That's what I'm proud about for being a Filipino. The undying love for each other and for the country is unending and I know we can get this through. Protect your loved ones everybody and safety should be our first and major concern above everything else.

Filipino Talent Got Standing Ovation

Remember when Charice Pempengco make waves since she was featured in Ellen DeGeneres show not so long ago? This week another Filipino duo got another invitation to be featured in the same show. They are teen guys namely James and Aldrin who hails from General Santos City, Philippines. Like Charice, they were discovered through YouTube which they uploaded and went viral. Luckily, they captured the heart of Ellen. Hearing this little guy's voice gave me goosebumps. He has an #angelicvoice and such a superb and pure talent. This video I got from my FB page. It makes me proud to be a Filipino. And made me envious even more. I am a frustrated singer by heart. I really want to sing and entertain people. I love the feeling of singing while people watch and listen to me sing. I know the feeling of being one of the audience and how it's like to be captivated by music. I love the feeling of being envied in a positive way (*wink). I promised my self if I couldn't get the proper singing ability, I would make my kids one of these days a singing sensation that would make Filipinos proud as well as their mother proud too. #stagemother mode

The Controversial Pork Barrel Fund

Much has been said and spilled out. A lot of versions came out that kind of shaken and awaken me. I've heard it countless of times and I know what's it all about. But what came into my curious mind is why it is termed as 'Pork' Barrel? According to Wikipedia, and I quote, "is the appropriation of government spending for localized projects secured solely or primarily to bring money to a representative's district. The usage originated in American English.^[1]." Further, the term pork barrel politics usually refers to spending which is intended to benefit constituents of a politician in return for their political support, either in the form of campaign contributions or votes. In the popular 1863 story "The Children of the Public", Edward Everett Hale used the term pork barrel as a homely metaphor for any form of public spending to the citizenry.^[3] ... More generally, a barrel of salt pork was a common larder item in 19th century households, and could be used as a measure of the family's financial well-being.

That being said, I thought it's a Filipino term knowing Filipinos could easily make a joke on something controversial and illegal pertaining to government funds. With the questionable spending and distribution of government funds to the 'wrong' projects, I thought that's why it's coined after malababoy na ugali (like animalistic attitude). But metaphorically, it is somewhat kind of related to what's happening in our government scenario. In my own opinion, there is nothing wrong having Pork Barrel funds. The problem really is how it's used and spent and the manner it's allocated. What's saddening is the politicians whom we put into the government office are the ones making use the big portion of money that's hardly earned by each Filipino worker. That government tax that is slashed from every minimal salary of an ordinary Filipino worker is worth every cent in the ordinary Filipino family. I don't know what happened to this literate, over-educated and over-accomplished politicians that the basic rule, 'DO NOT STEAL' is not understood or just overlooked. This is one of the basic rule our CREATOR has taught us. Why their greediness over power their intention to 'serve' where in fact, they should be our servant and not the other way around. As a matter of fact, it should be their way of expressing their 'utang na loob' to us because if not for our vote, they wouldn't enjoy the privileges they are getting now. I'm NOT a kind of person who doesn't say a piece about government issues and stuff. But for this particular topic, I'd like to burst out my disappointment, disgust and protest to the same old government system and ideals that we're used to have. If not, I'll regret it that I haven't stand for the majority of Filipinos who are clamoring for justice. Shame on you DIRTY and TRADITIONAL POLITICIANS! I salute these whistle blowers who in one way or another have a little bit of dignity and integrity and a lot of courage and conscience (where these politicos don't have I bet) to show not for themselves but for the entire Filipinos. It's time for change, a deep cleansing of our dirty politics. It's now or never folks. It's time to end this evil ways. It's not helping us as they keep on saying that we're on our way to development. Maybe it's them who are becoming richer and living a life too much of a comfort. Our nation will never ever reach the goal and vision we have aimed for this country nor a government that is corrupt-less. It's a far cry from where we are standing now. 'Tuwid na daan' (straight road)? I don't think so. Unless we act for ourselves and NOT to leave it alone to this politicos who are doing dirty tactics as long as they reign supreme in their positions. How rude and shameless these politicians are. They are living in luxury and lavish lives while the rest of the poor don't even have food or slippers to buy. 

I'm sorry for pouring out negative remarks here. I'd really like to share something that concerns us all. I thought I'm done with my sentiments in my post here. But last night, words are flowing in my head and that I want to address it more. I really feel for the majority of Filipinos who for a very long time are suffering from tainted truth and lies. Let us be one in heart, mind and soul that Filipinos are really worth dying for.

'Maring' Hits Like No Other, Pork Barrel for the Rescue

It was my first time to see on television this morning the nightmare it brought Luzon area particularly Metro Manila and other nearby cities/provinces like Cavite and Laguna to name a few that was devastated by Tropical Storm 'Maring' that hit Philippine territory last Saturday, August 17. I didn't imagine that its destruction is massive and terrible again. Everyday in our household, our television is always tuned in to Dora the Explorer and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. And there's no chance or way we could check the current events happening in the world. Anyway, as I Yahoo-ed and Google-ed today in the internet, there are countless of casualties (while some still not identified) from across regions in Luzon not only in Metro Manila as what I've seen this morning. I lost track of the previous typhoons that previously hit our country before this which is Labuyo in a span of less than a week leaving thousands homeless and families either separated or became casualties. I've seen it first with Ondoy, Sendong in Cagayan de Oro, Pablo in Davao Oriental and then now, Maring. And there's a new typhoon to enter by Wednesday or at most Friday as what I've read in the internet today. I hope it will not be disastrous like Maring (God forbids) or it may swerve to somewhere else and spare us another life threatening event.

 It's never been the same and we, still haven't learned from the past tragedies. It all boils down to destruction of our Mother Nature, our environment. Well, it's not that we took hold of the weather situation or disturbance but if only we try to protect our environment, the aftermath of this so called weather calamities would not have gone this far. If only there's no illegal logging, trees could have protect us from ranging water current or it could have hold the roots that will cause flash floods and landslides. If only there's a proper drainage/sewerage system that will hold the water from spilling in our areas. If only we have learned to recycle, reuse our garbage and put it in proper disposal and use, then we could have save thousands and millions of lives. If only our government officials could have make a good projects like proper drainage system, recycling methods and environmental issues, then maybe it will make a big difference. As corruption in the government tends to blow out once AGAIN, maybe its high time that these government officials stand up not for themselves but for our country. Use our money through the government taxes we are paying through projects that we will enjoy not just now but for the next Filipino generations and not only YOU benefiting from it. After all, we've seen and read those whistle blowers who courageously spilled out detail by detail on how this IDIOT government lawmakers and the governing body abuse its power, even if their lives are at stake. As what my hubby told me, even if it already came out in the open, corruption cannot be completely abolished because they are also the people who will decide to let go or remain the 'Pork Barrel' (anak ng baboy!). The biggest feat for us Filipinos will be to let these corrupt officials surrender against all odds. That we need to pray harder and a miracle to happen. It is not easy for these whistle blowers to speak up for it means their lives and that of their family is in danger. To those who benefited a lot on this 'Pork Barrel' thing, may God be with you. If for this lifetime you enjoy to the fullest, then expect for the worst when you're called up. Good luck na lang sa inyo!

Baguio, the City of Pines: After a Decade

For the longest time, I've been yearning to come back in the coolest place in the Philippines, Baguio. I'm wondering how's it like today. I can vividly remember the sweet and dusky smell of pine trees that welcomes us, of the hushing cold wind that blows right on my face and the fireplace in every house. I want to experience again walking around the city without worrying of sweat and air pollution that stinks in my face, body and clothes. Whilst, sporting a covered and cozy attire like you're outside the Philippines. It's great to try out the unusual stuff right?

The City of Baguio  (Ilokano: Ciudad ti Baguio; Filipino: Lungsod ng Baguio; Pangasinan: Ciudad na Baguio, according to Wikipedia) is the go-to destination during the summer season here in the Philippines (usually falls on the early months of the year). It was designated by the Philippine Commission as the Summer Capital of the Philippines on June 1903 due to its cool climate and high elevation with temperature at around 8 degrees Celsius with an average temperature ranging from 15 to 23 degrees Celsius. Apart from the cold temperature, strolling around the place where everywhere you have a view of pine trees that relaxes oneself. I feel fresh and sweet. What's great is you can never see establishments and houses that has air conditioner as well as taxi cabs. You can't see one in there. Lest a fire place is a staple in every household. Cool noh? And energy saver too!

Some of its known and long-time tourist attraction when in there is the Mansion, The Burnham Park, the Mines View Park, Camp John Hay among others. The Session Road is where all the buzz is happening. It's the center of trade and life of the city. I love their thrift shops (the ukay-ukay), their strawberry and ube jam, their flavorful cornicks (dried corn bits), their hand woven handicrafts are some my the favorite stuff and memories in Baguio.

Maybe now they have a lot of tourist destinations. I'm excited for our planned vacation with hubby. We're thinking too of bringing our 2 year old daughter along. It will be her first airplane ride. I wonder what will be her reaction. I bet she'll have a good time as well as my husband. He has never set his foot there so I suggest that we should proceed to Baguio instead. Hubby smiled with agreement. So off to Baguio soon! Any suggestions where to stroll and visit new attractions in there?

Fiba FIlipinas, Almost!

The intensity of the game, the solidarity, the "Puso" (Heart in English) showed by the Team "Gilas" Philippines had got me on my feet  for 3 days until last night. My Facebook feed from my friends a few days back, I just brushed it off until last night. But because basketball game is not my cup of tea, and because my hubby can't stop talking and raving about it then I caved in and watched the finals with him last night. The spirit is indeed contagious and I feel patriotic for that moment when our very own, Team Philippines, proved they have everything in their hands. It was an overwhelming feeling when you are representing for the majority apart from their own selves. It was a joyous celebration for the entire nation even if we got the Silver place. Not bad at all. The last time that the Philippines represent for the World FIBA Basketball Cup was about 40 years ago in the season of Freddie Webb and other notable players at that time. So after many years, it's time indeed to cheer up and be merry. It was a momentous event and I think that our Team "Gilas'  has the edge and should have won. But it's not meant to be. But what's important is they qualify to represent our country and play for the World FIBA Cup to be held in Spain next year.

Let's be hopeful and wishing for another miracle to happen. Long live Team 'Gilas' Philippines! Let the  power shine through.

Rejoice and Remain Hopeful, our Nurses!

I read a column from yesterday's local newspaper about our nurses to get higher pay. Hooray and finally it got noticed. 

Honestly, our nurses are underpaid and over worked here in our country. I know it's their duty of service that comes along with their profession. But suffice to say, they are not well compensated even fairly. I'd say that the population of nurses here in our country varies unpredictably. Unpredictable in the sense that its overpopulation would mean there's no available hospitals or health-related centers that will cater to their service because of no work available or no vacancies thus many are unemployed. Underpopulation in the sense that the highly skilled and qualified nurses are going abroad for a better pay and finding jobs that are not available here in the Philippines thus making our hospitals running out of quality service nurses and they are much needed as to the growing demand of patients. I know, a lot of nurses will be glad on this proposed bill that is brought back for passing. Being away from their loved ones is the last resort our nurses would do in order to proved for their families. It is a big sacrifice an OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers) can do just to make a beautiful future for their own family. With this great news, a lot of nurses who just settled here on our country will be given jobs and better opportunities for a decent living. 

I hope this will not be passed out once again. It's about time that these said workforce be given of what is due for them. P-Noy, I hope this will not be a promise that will again be drained somewhere else. 

Long Live Philippines!!

This is a belated greetings to my fellow countrymen. Yesterday marks our 115th year of Independence from foreign colonizers. It feels great to be celebrating it from the usual holiday where we just bum around the house and take a midweek rest. Since my hubby is a government employee and their office was invited to celebrate it at SM City Davao, we thought that it would be nice idea that I come along with my eldest daughter with him. So I dolled up my little princess in an exercise/jogging-inspired outfit since it will be an early morning event which started off with a parade of guards holding Philippine flags. I don't have idea how many are they. But its nice to see it up close.

This is inside SM's Annex area where a short program was held. It was also a turn over of school supplies which SM donated to the City government to help those schools who are in dire need of it. I love SM's idea of making a big Philippine Flag where it was made up of school supplies. I just regret that I didn't take a photo from above.

My kiddo is excited where she makes a pose and dancing beside the uniformed Boy Scouts.

Right on the 2nd Floor, you could see those security guards holding the Philippine flags. They surrounded the whole area. I felt like being proud of my roots.

My Take on The Philippine Kasambahay Law

June 04, 2013 marks the effectivity of Republic Act No. 10361, otherwise known as the "Domestic Workers Act" or "Batas Kasambahay" (you can view the bill here or a more simplified version here). A "Kasambahay" or "Domestic Worker" as what it say are the general house-helper, nanny or "yaya", cook, gardener, or laundry person (but shall exclude family drivers, persons under foster family arrangement and service providers. You can view the entire details under Sec. 2 & 3 of the bill). As an employer, I have to read thoroughly, know and understand what is the bill all about. I have a nanny and a house-helper because of my 2 kids. If not, I'd prefer not to have even one.

In general, my opinion on the passed bill is that it is applicable for those people who drafted and spearheaded it. They are politicians whose income is way beyond the salaries of ordinary people. Or yet they haven't experienced to have worked with a "problem-child" house-helper. Moreover, it should have fair play with regards to the rules and regulations stipulated between the employer and employee and not weighing more only on the employee or vice-versa. But in this case, it's like the kasambahay had all the rights and you, the owner of the house, don't have!

I'm quoting on some rules in the bill that I have a reaction to. Read after the break..

Torn between Soleil and Inspire 2... Thanks Sun!

So what the heck I'm talking about? It's sounds like an online game, isn't it? But nope and I'm not addicted to it either like the current online craze, Candy Crush. Techies and gadget freaks would now what I'm blabbering. These are some of the latest mobile phones introduced by Alcatel. I'm no expert to this nor recommend which is the better nor will I do reviews for both. Why I am sharing this is because my hubby is getting a postpaid line with Sun Cellular (to my persistence, he gave in. What an obedient husband!).

So when he said the magic word "Yes", I immediately searched Sun Cellular's website and look for the right phone (for me, hehehe!) in accordance to the budget my hubby has for the month. He has a 300 monthly load allowance from their office so I quickly look directly to that range of amount. They have Fixed Load Plan of 299 but the available phones are quite limited. They also have a Regular Plan 350 and had more choices of phones. To name a few: Samsung, Nokia, Cherry Mobile phones are under the said plan. I searched reviews on what's the best amongst them. I thought of Cherry mobile because it's a Philippine brand. But I saw reviews that the downside of which is the battery. It easily gets weak even if it's not used so much. So it turns out that Alcatel One Touch Inspire 2 won my heart  ;)). But just this morning, when I ran again to their site, there's additional phone that was included. It's the Alcatel One Touch Soleil. This is the winner! This is now my choice. Thanks also to my officemate who helped and enlighten me a lot as to which of them is the best.

Alcatel is owned by TCL (see details here). I've heard TCL and saw some of their television sets in various appliance stores. The reviews I've read on their mobile phones are more on the positive note. Most of the comments are their mobile phones are really sturdy and durable and even can last for a long time. Of course if you also know how to take extra care of your things, it will stay for a longer time. One commenter said that his wife has an Alcatel unit for a long time already even if it fell a couple of times. This is quite interesting since I'm quite an "OC" when it comes to taking care of my things. So for sure this will stay a couple of years for me.

Lunar Eclipse: 04/25/13

I didn't know this early dawn that there was a Lunar eclipse until I saw this morning on TV in a morning show. Yesterday, I was at the whole time browsing the internet and visiting blog sites (that in between office work of course!hehe) but I didn't come across any article related to it. And so right now I'm browsing some sites related to this recent phenomenon.

A partial lunar eclipse will occur on Thursday/Friday, April 25/26, 2013, and will be seen in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Australia.(Source)

Specifically, this partial lunar eclipse will be seen in eastern Europe and Africa, through the Middle East, and in southeast Asia and western Australia.

The maximum portion of the partial lunar eclipse will occur at about 20:07 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which correlates to:

• 10:07 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013, in Cairo, Egypt, Africa
• 4:07 a.m. Friday, April 26, 2013, in Perth, Western Australia, Australia   
• 5:07 a.m. Friday, April 26, 2013, in Tokyo, Japan, Asia

This eclipse is a partial lunar eclipse, meaning that at its maximum only a part of the Moon will be blocked out by the Earth’s umbral shadow.

While on the other hand, as for PAG-ASA forecast:

Filipino sky-watchers may be in for a treat before dawn Friday with a partial lunar eclipse that will last until the early morning.

The PAGASA said the eclipse will be "safe to watch," and observers need not use protective filters.

"A pair of binoculars will help magnify the view and will make the red coloration of the Moon brighter," PAGASA OIC Vicente Malano said.

He said the umbral eclipse magnitude will be 1.47 percent and will also be visible primarily in Australia, most of Asia, Africa, Europe and Antarctica.

In Manila, Malano said the moon will rise at 5:43 p.m. on April 25, and will set at 5:40 a.m. on April 26.

"The eclipse will begin at 2:03 a.m. Philippine Standard Time (PST) and will end at 6:11 a.m. (PST)," he said.

PAGASA said the penumbral eclipse (partial shading of a part of the moon) begins at 2:03 a.m., while the partial eclipse begins at 3:54 a.m.

It added the partial eclipse ends 4:21 a.m. while the penumbral eclipse ends at 6:11 a.m. — LBG, GMA News

As I was visiting some blog sites of bloggers here in the Philippines, I came across one site that mentioned www.dealdozen.com. In here, you can purchase items at a much lower price. As I searched for the that site and started browsing for its offers, I was hooked on to the travel & adventure section. My Blog got PR1

Yey! Finally my online diary got recognized today. For these past few days, I've been trying to check if my page rank got at least a 1. But it failed and even was invalid when I try to check it via page rank checker . And at least today when I tried to check again, I got a PR 1 today. I still have a long way to go since the highest is 10. Not too bad compared to last week with no rank at all. And here's another one, I check also my blog site if how it ranked in the top blog of the Philippines and from last week's 700++, I am now at 495 (as of writing time). Thanks to all my fellow bloggers who have been visiting my site religiously and even oftentimes. If not for your support, my site wouldn't have a face in the blogosphere.

Public Figures for Public Consumption

It has been a chaotic drama for Philippine celebrities, Mr. & Mrs. Santiago versus Mon Tulfo over the weekend. They are public figures here in the Philippines from show business and from media, respectively. I was totally clueless until I found in Yahoo! Philippines trending in the top stories. It started out when Mrs. Santiago (Claudine) found out here baggage was missing in the airport of their destination, Manila, where her whole family came from a vacation in the white sand beaches in the island of Boracay. As per reports, Mrs. Santiago was scolding the ground attendants because of her luggage that was not loaded in the local plane carrier they were in. She even threatened those two ground personnel of that place carrier to be fired from their job. Mr. Tulfo was there, who came from Davao, and saw and heard the whole commotion. And as a media personality, he took pictures/video of what transpired at that moment. When Mr. Santiago (Raymart) saw Mr. Tulfo doing that, Raymart came to Tulfo already fuming with anger, asking why is he getting pictures/video of his wife. Then, as the two parties claimed who's who to give the first fist, started the rumble.

As I was looking on the photos and videos that was on print and television, I feel sorry for both parties because of their initial reactions that came to a chaos. First, I found Claudine very arrogant because of her missing luggage which she threatens the staff to be fired from their work. I don't found it a proper way to deal with that situation. There was a mistake from the plane carrier's staff but it should not be arranged with that kind of attitude she was showing and won't solve the problem either by being haughty. Second, for Raymart to indulge in a fist fight which cause so much trouble in both parties was a total mess. He would have been calm and talk to Mr. Tulfo in a proper manner since they are public figures. And people look to them as role models because they are public figures. Lastly, for Mon Tulfo. As a media practitioner, everything they see which will be a good material for a story they will document. But sometimes, they don't know how to respect some privacy that whey will make a story out of emotional or personal bias.

For the Santiago couple, where art thou values and decency? Mr. Tulfo, give some privacy and respect.

"Bakasyunista"

I received a call today from my hubby that his former office-mate together with his family is here in Davao City for a vacation. Kenneth is now residing with his wife and kids in New York where his wife is working as a nurse. Kenneth and my hubby are close office-mates way before and I got to know him well. We hang out before when me and husband are still not married. He's a nice person even if he comes from a well-off family. Anyway, I just realized that this summer is all about my family and friends coming home from abroad, having their vacation. It's nice to be around them for the longest time. First, my brother and his wife coming here last March, then, my sister-in-law too. After a couple of days, my husband's aunt all the way from Kuwait working as a nurse also was here and lastly the Obed family. Apart from that, I would not miss the "pasalubong's" or the presents given to us. But of course, what matters is there presence and not by the material things given.

I can relate to the feeling of a "bakasyunista" coming home. There's no place like home indeed. And truly, Philippines is where I belong where I have everything: my family, friends and the warmth and smiles of every Filipino that makes us stand out from the rest.
